Explanation of Occupational Health: Occupational Health is concerned with the two-way relationship of work and health: Health<>Work The focus is on achieving a healthy working environment supported by a healthy work force. The main thrust of occupational health is to prevent ill health rather than to cure it. A healthy workforce is a happy workforce. Employees enjoy working for organisations that take care of their staff. Is Occupational Health A Legal Requirement? The Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974 imposes a duty on employers to ensure the health and safety of their employees, contractors and site visitors so far as is reasonably practicable. This Act has been supplemented by Regulations and Approved Codes of Practice related to specific work activities. A wide range of service provision is available either on a single appointment basis, a consultancy task or an ongoing service contract. The scope of the Occupational Health Services includes:
Occupational Physician Training and Background: Dr Simon Kemp
MRCGP, AFOM works as a job share GP at Daisy Villa and has a special interest
in Occupational Health. He trained in Aberdeen and attained his GP qualification
(MRCGP) in 1993. For 6 years he worked in a full time occupational health
training post in Aberdeen attaining the AFOM qualification. During this
time he was a medical advisor for a number of small and large and varied
organizations. He moved to Orkney in 1999, and in addition to his general
practice work, he continues to provide occupational health services to
a number of local companies.
