Anna Pharoah Inauguration Engineer Personal profile: I graduated in Fine Art from The Hull School of Art in 2002 specialising in Time Based Media and currently work as a member of an artist run space: The Red Gallery. Since graduating I have curated a group show in Goole, Yorkshire, and taken part in artist-led literature projects, such as Ibsen v Strindberg, a collaborative drama adaptation that was part of last year's Humber Mouth. I have shown solo performance work at The Ferens Gallery and at Hull Time Based Arts and I have taken part in sound events such as Re.projects in Gloucester and the Zoo & Logical Times audio edition. I recently directed and produced an audio play: 'A Bastard's Tale', adapted from a film script, working with 12 other artists. |

Artist's Statement: I am currently working within the format of performance and intervention. I use digital media, public interaction, drawing, painting and general debris to realise projects. Recently my practise has centred on creating performances and interventions that draw upon an audience or from members of the public. I am interested in the idea that a journey is itself a form of exchange of dialogue with the world around. I am currently interested in developing ways of gathering material from people, such as text and images. I create unusual ways of gathering material from the world around. This 'study' is based on the random selection procedure of chance encounters and constructed scenarios designed to interact with strangers. I do not draw conclusions, but represent people through chance-discovery, one-off moments and the lost-then-found treasure of abandoned created objects, perhaps slowly building a portrait of curiosity or intrigue through documentation. I am experimenting with creating scenarios and interaction, working within the boundaries of the expected phenomena that exist within a location or situation already, and extending it until it becomes on the verge of what is believable. My work has mainly been outside of the traditional gallery context in a variety of settings and venues and I am interested in making site-specific work, or creating my own temporary sites in places that have potential for chance audiences. |
