THE

INDEPENDENT ART SCHOOL

Description

WHAT WE DO

The Independent Art School (IAS) has been setting up meetings for artists since 1999. It functions as an alternative University with no home. This online Journal contains writings from past conferences and events. The main base is in Hull where regular events are organised.

The IAS has developed as an artistic concept whereby different artists can take it on. Pippa Koszerek initiates activities in Hull, while other individuals have taken on the project in Newcastle and London. Most recently a series of collaborations have been initiated with several other artists. This is the Independent Art School Lecturer programme, which aims to enable artists to take on the theme of being a Lecturer/Tutor and develop an artwork or workshop that reflects their own art practice. Thereby questioning and exploring what it means to be and to develop as an artist.

A current concern of the Independent Art School is to bring together artists of divergent viewpoints and researchers in non-artistic fields as a way of expanding artistic dialogue and opportunities for artists.

The Independent Art School is establishing the Hull Independent Research Centre through regular monthly forums and commissioned activity as a way of consolidating its current activities into a regular programme and complementing artistic activity within the city through a regular critical contribution.

The Hull Independent Research Centre will have three main objectives:

- To commission high quality critical writing about art projects and exhibitions in Hull.
- To set up a monthly forum that will encourage cross-specialism dialogue, and invite Hull based art historians, philosophers, researchers etc to enter into dialogue alongside artists and other creative practitioners.
- To promote and support the activities of the Independent Art School Lecturers and provide an environment where artistic collaborators can introduce their projects to a Hull audience.
