IAS HULL EVENTS

IAS NEWSCASTLE
Set up in 1999, The Independent Art School has involved many people as it has developed. It began as The New Hull School of Art, a two week school set up at the RED gallery in Hull as a statement against the imposition of modularity onto the fine art course at Hull School of Art & Design.

The Independent Art School Conference followed in October 2000, running alongside Hull Time Based Arts ROOT festival. Where the work-in school at the RED gallery had been a statement against University policies and the lack of decision-making power held by both students and staff, the Conference began to question wider issues surrounding art education and what it should or could be.

Models of Practice followed in february 2001 at Dilston Grove, a Cafe Gallery venue in London. This time the emphasis moved onto dialogue about peoples own art practice. It had become evident at the Conference that such events could be seen as 'temporary schools' in themselves. The IAS moved away from simply questioning educational structures to creating its own educational environments.

The INDEPENDENT ART SCHOOL

An evolving project based on a questioning and D-I-Y ethos, manifesting itself through non-institutional environments which can be described as "temporary schools". Students, artists and lecturers who participate in these events take on, at once, all and none of these roles. You are welcome to use this web site as a source for information or to become more involved within the Independent Art School.
