Hunstanton.
Hunstanton, or Sunny Hunny, is a popular resort,
with a large sandy beach and shallow water. It is celebrated as the
only resort on the East Coast that faces west and from which you can
watch the sun set over the sea. 'New Hunstanton' was the creation
of the Le Strange family who built this 'carrstone town' with the
coming of the railway (now closed) during the 1860s.

|
Also
famous are the tri-coloured cliffs (white and red chalk above
red carrstone), the lighthouse and the remains of St Edmund's
Chapel which marks the point where the ancient trackway known
as the Icknield Way reaches the Wash.
|
There
are plenty of amusement arcades, a variety of shops, cafes and pubs
to explore. There is also a fun fair (open Easter - Oct), the Oasis
Leisure pool, Sealife centre, crazy golf and Sailing club. There are
pony rides on the beach, and a World War Two landing craft give tours
to Seal Island. In past years the Radio 1 Road show has taken place
on the green in the centre of Hunstanton. In the northern part of
the town there are elegant Edwardian carrstone houses.
Old
Hunstanton.
Old Hunstanton is quieter than the main resort.
It was originally a fishing village and the flint, chalk and carstone
cottages still flank the A 149 and the road to the fifteenth century
church.
|
The
sandy beaches are backed by red and white striped cliffs to
the west and sand dunes to the east. Perched on the cliffs close
to the lighthouse is a pitch and putt golf course.
