Heroes, Villains and Others from Hastings
by
Mary Haskell Porter
Imagine how dull and boring our world would be if we were
all the same; if no one did anything to attract notice or stand out in any
way. Imagine a place where everyone was
a Mr or Mrs Average, where feats of heroism were unknown and eccentric or even
outright bad behaviour never seen. Such
a world would be unbearably banal.
Hastings, the place in which I was born and grew up,
and in which I now love to live, is so rich in its variety of human behaviour
that no one could ever be other than endlessly fascinated by it all. Why people behave as they do, will remain,
for most of us, a complete mystery.
Some choose a particular lifestyle; others seem driven by some invisible
force that can only be guessed at. In
the end, all we can do is watch, admire or deplore…and wonder.

Heroes, Villains and Others from Hastings
by
Mary Haskell Porter
Encouraged by readers who share my fascination with the
diversity of human behaviour and existence, I offer this second book. I hope
readers will find as much to interest them as I did when writing it. The lives
of those featured range from the highly courageous to the most shameful. I have
again included people who have all lived or worked in Hastings or St Leonards,
thereby contributing through their fame, notoriety or other qualities to the
history and character of the town.

Hastings
in Peace and War, 1930-1945
by
Mary Haskell Porter
From being a tranquil seaside resort on the South
Coast throughout the 1930s, Hastings became a town under attack during the Second
World War. The contrast between the days of peace and the later horrors and
restrictions of living in a Defence Area in wartime is portrayed by the author.
To her own recollections, she has added those of others who were there. These,
with photographs and other contemporary illustrations, reveal how the town was
run and how its people lived.
