“Trust in providence and have treasure that will last.  Where your treasure is, there will your heart be, too.”  Luke  12: 34

Some libraries throughout Britain and the United States – especially small ones – bear some wording on the building:
Funded by Carnegie

The 11 August, is the anniversary of the death in 1919 of Andrew Carnegie
He was born of a poor family in Scotland, and later emigrated to the United States, aged 13.  There, in the State of Pennsylvania, he found work as a bobbin boy, replacing cotton bobbins in a mill, having to work 11 hours a day.
Later he worked his way up in a telegraph office and a railway company. He had started with nothing, but became very wealthy in the Pullman Railway Company and by investing in land where there was coal, iron and oil.
After the American Civil war he founded a company that produced iron railway bridges, and then formed his own iron and steel corporation.Although he had little education himself in school, he was always particularly interested in education and books.

CARNEGIE STEEL WORKS

Whilst he was alive, Andrew Carnegie gave away more than $350 million to projects dealing with education, culture and peace.  1,700 libraries across the United States and Britain received money from him.

                   He once said:

PULLMAN RAILWAY COMPANY

The man who dies rich, dies disgraced.”

It is worth reflecting on what he meant by those words…

Readings : Luke 12:13-34; Luke 16: 19-31; Luke 17: 18-23

Prayers:

Monday:
Lord Jesus, you talked about the need for us to have our priorities right, and not to hoard possessions.  You said that where our treasure is, there our heart and commitment will really be.  Touch our hearts that we may love people and use things – and never the other way around.  Inspire us to seek first your kingdom and use our talents and gifts for the benefit of others.  Amen

Tuesday:
Lord, we do not want to be selfish.  We do realize how important it is to value and appreciate ourselves, and we know that we need genuine love for ourselves if we are to fully love others.  Remind us of the importance of keeping time and space and quiet for ourselves and remind us to respect the personal needs of others, too.      Amen.
Wednesday:
Lord God, you who call each one of us by our name, we thank you for making us who we are.  Inspire us to grow as genuine and sincere people with positive attitudes, right values and generous spirits.  Amen
Thursday:
Lord, help us to keep an eye on the small things in life as well as the bigger issues; because my thoughts become my attitude, my attitude becomes my words, my words become my actions, and my actions form my character.  Amen

Friday:
Be there, Lord, in that instant before every thought that we may choose wisely with our thoughts and our attitudes; with our words and our actions so that we may grow as the person you call us to be. Amen.
