May 2001

The 3rd month with F&M, we continue with the disinfecting, and hope for the best, so far so good. Whatever the political spindoctors say, (they may massage the figures down), we feel extremely exposed, with cases popping up all over the country. Now is definitely not the time to open up the countryside, there is much more danger now than there was when they closed it down in the first place.

Because of the unique breeding of our herd Babs thought it would be prudent to take some semen from the bulls to put into store so that we could save the genetics if we were struck down. Sounds simple? We hadn`t bargained for MAFF!! It took 2months and hundreds of phone calls to get permission to do it. Now we finally have and at least the future of the herd is safe.

Life, however moves on, the Herefords have finished calving (13 bulls 2 heifers!!).The Friesian cows are dropping lots of heifers so I`m sure it will all balance up in the end.

100 acres of silage in a day! That is what our contractor managed this year, well done, and some of the best we have made for years. The yields better than last year (80% of conventional).

Doing our questionnaire for our Organic certificate this year was like sitting an exam! We managed to pass and have now got our Organic certificate. Its been a long haul, but, well worth it.

I wish I could hear all the birds singing (I have done too much shooting) - they are wonderful at the moment, but when I see a Blackcap singing and I can't hear it, I know how much I am missing - such is life!
