Early in the month it dried up and we managed to get the rest of the grass seeds planted having once again combed the barley for weeds. We also managed to plant the Maize and Potatoes, all going in well.
It seems a bit strange not applying spray or fertilizer but so far the crops and grass are looking well if a little lighter shade of green!!
Today (the29th) we have finished the first cut of grass silage, about 7 tons to the acre , about 66% of our normal yield ,but ,I think, very good quality.
While fishing on the River Wye I counted nearly twice as many Sandmartins nests as usual on their sandy bank, unfortunately many will be lost to the local Badger who seems to delight in scratching them out.
The Mayfly hatch started slowly on the 20~ The fish not really taking to them until the end of the month, one fish we found to be packed with May bugs (or Cockchafers)!!
Two pairs of Peewits have chicks, and their seems to be pairs of Skylarks everywhere! So Organics must be doing our birds some good!
We held a farm walk for about 80 farmers , fortunately the farm looked in good order so we didn't come in for too much flak!
We have finally finished decorating our big B&B room ready for the summer it' s always a job in such an old house , this time the old hair plaster was OK.
