The Leen is mentioned in the Doomsday Book, but it's history must go back further - for there is an ancient Dyke across the farm dated to the 7th C. This is shown by aerial photographs to be built over an even earlier settlement. The farmhouse is believed to date back to the 14th C, but most of it, together with the buildings around it were built from the 17th C on, being typical Herefordshire 'timber frame' construction. The farm still has a 'West Field' indicating its mediaeval origins. It is divided into 25 fields with some boundaries dating back hundreds of years and others laid out in the 1860's for the steam ploughs. |
