August

The Swallows, House and Sand Martins gathered up on the roof of our barn for a few days at the end of the month then all disappeared on their long journey South.
It must be in the air. Because we have said our goodbyes to Chris and Sal (son and daughter) who have both flown off to New Zealand for prolonged stays. We wish them luck but we shall miss them.

Sal and Ab`s off on their travels

Started picking Broccoli and Leeks at the beginning of the month. There seems to be a good crop of both with a good market for Broccoli but a slow one for Leeks (its not really Leek eating weather I suppose) Weeding of Sweetcorn, Carrots, Leeks and other crops continues.

Carrots and Leeks looking really good

and 2 weeks later (the flowers are Marigolds)

A nice even crop of Sweetcorn

Cut some unripe wheat for crimping (about 100 tons crushed and treated with an acid to preserve it for feed for the cows in winter). Harvested the Rye, about 2 tons an acre, a nice clean sample for use as a green manure on next years veg. fields.
