April 2001

A fairly normal month as far as the weather goes, with April showers, a few frosts and a good soak now and again. Foot and Mouth is only about 5 miles away now (about a week ago) so we try to stay as careful as we can, with disinfectant bath and mats being topped up regularly and as little movement as possible on or off the farm.

We miss seeing so much of our family, our friends and our visitors. Babs misses the Point to Points and I miss walking in the country and most of all my fishing.

The Herefords continue to calve, with 2 heifers to start, then 9 bulls in a row with 4 more to go. The next batch of Friesians have also started with about 50 expected over the next few weeks. Because we are unable to move the calves off the farm we seem to be collecting up quite a few, I hope they will be needed when all this is over.

I can hardly believe it was well over 2 years ago that we decided to farm Organically, it has been a tremendous learning process for all of us, but very fulfilling as we gradually see that it will be possible to make a living (hopefully long term). Just a month to go before we sell our first Organic product, but still another 3 years before everything is!

Sand Martins April 3rd, Swallows 12th,House Martins 16th and the Cuckoo (dead on time) the 21st. The year rolls on. The Primroses are a picture and the Bluebells are beginning to carpet the woods, pushing aside the Wood Anenomes. The young Rooks are louder by the day and the Tadpoles get bigger and fatter, it will soon all be lost in shades of green. Will it be the Oak or the Ash this year?
