Fencing in Malta was re-introduced in 1992 by Juan Formosa after a 10-year absence of the sport on the local scene. From 1992 to 1995 active promotion of the sport was launched in schools, amongst the public through displays, hands-on sessions and campaigns in the local media. In 1995 the St. Paul Fencing club was founded.
Prior to the re-introduction of the sport on a formal basis, Juan Formosa had been enrolled in the sport by enthusiasts at a local Christian Brothers' school and Maltese Army Personnel.
The St. Paul Fencing Club is also a member of the National Fencing Association Malta (N.F.A.M).
In turn, the N.F.A. M. is affiliated to the Maltese Olympic Committee (M.O.C.), the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (F.I.E.), European Fencing Confederatiom (C.E.E.) and the Mediterranean Fencing Confederatiom (COMES).
