Number Plate Regulations

One of our founder members, Alex Jackson, has been stopped by the police on several occasions and questioned about the size of his number plates bearing the cherished registration X 2.
Alex claims that his number plate is legal and that whilst the regulations do specify size, typeface and spacing of lettering and numbers and their relationship to the border of the plate, they do not specify the actual size of the plate itself. As this is an ongoing situation we will update the information as and when it becomes available.
Members may not be aware that there are new regulations which could come into force in January 2008 concerning the use of 'show plates'. Vehicles that bear number plates not complying with the current legislation by displaying mis-spaced, doctored or non-standard characters etc. are likely to attract more attention from the police. MOT stations are already clamping down on these when testing vehicles and it is understood a rule may be introduced giving the authorities the right to confiscate a registration should you be cautioned three times for number plate offences.
You have been warned.
Links to the various regulations will be posted here soon, meanwhile below is a link to the 'Consultation Document on changes to the Regulation of Number Plate Supply in the United Kingdom' dated 3 July 2007.
www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/consultations/cons_020707.pdf
It is understood that responses to this consultation should be available soon at www.dvla.gov.uk/consultations
If adopted the regulations will make it an offence to actually supply a number plate not complying with the legislation.
