There are many important things that go on backstage.. that make the show in production possible, as well as keeping the society running smoothly.

Some of the main areas are listed here. If you would like to help with them, we'd be pleased to hear from you!

The production team
For each musical or play being produced by the society, a production team is appointed by the KODS Committee.

The main roles are:-
Director, Musical Director, Rehearsal Pianist, Choreographer, Stage Manager, Wardrobe Mistress, Lighting Director, Sound, Properties Manager, Prompt.. plus others when required. These key players then organise their own teams to prepare for and support the production through its run.

The way in which we tend to operate some of these areas is explained below:-

Scenery and set building
We make our own scenery and sets, and have been very creative and also made some difficult sets, like the "wet set" for "Singing in the Rain" in March 2001. Some plays, like "Noises Off" have required complex platforms and stairs for the actors walk up and down, with copious amounts of working doors too..Our leading carpenters and set building wizards are always wondering what they will be called upon next to create!

Costumes
Depending on the production, these are hired in, or drawn from our own wardrobe. Some members turn their hands to sewing when the need arises too..

Properties
A large array of items are often needed for productions, and members who are not on-stage for that show, often lend a hand by assisting with the props as well as scene shifting. Again, we have a range of items stored away, although there can be the sudden and urgent call for some object or other to dress the forthcoming set!.."anyone lend us a spare settee.. painting.. vase.. bookcase..table lamp.."?

Prompt
Just in case those on stage have a sudden short term memory loss.. a quick prompt from the corner can do just the job..! This role is taken by sharp eyed and eared members, so saving the heart palpitations of those on stage.

Lighting and sound
Keeping those on stage well lit and creating the right atmosphere, the lighting team play their part. Sound effects as well as careful amplification of the actors/singers where required, is provided by specialists appointed for the production.

-Thanks to everyone who helped with the set and all the backstage work on our recent productions..
