Once again a host of British musical entertainment groups will be going Side-by-Side for a Gala performance at the Capitol Theatre, Rojales on February 25, at 20.00 hrs, doors open 19.00 hrs. This show promises to be a musical treat, as groups performing include the Vega Baja Big Band, La Marina Tappers, Allegro, Velvetones, TAABS, and the Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers. Make sure of your tickets at 8 euros as soon as possible - it's a one night only show and is sure to be a sell-out. PILAR DE LA HORADADA BRANCH
RAISES 600€ MORE FOR SCANNER APPEAL

Last November Ricky and Elaine of the VIP Bar in Pinar de Campoverde and Jason from the Pilar Snooker Club at Cañada de Praes, organised a series of fund raising events for the AECC Scanner Appeal in memory of one of their customers, Lucy Hunking. Bingo nights were held at both venues and a charity night at the VIP Bar where Jon Summer (singer/comedian) and Steve Crowe (singer/guitarist) who is a Pinar de Campoverde resident entertained and gave their time for the evening. Lucy's widower, Ewan, and her son Stephen decided that the proceeds should go to the Scanner Appeal. On Tuesday 5th February, Ewan Hunking presented Grahame Dickson, treasurer, from the Pilar de la Horadada English speaking group with 500€ for the appeal. We would like to thank all concerned for their help, it is much appreciated.

The Pilar Table Tennis Club who meet in the sports hall in Pilar de la Horadada on Mondays (10.00-12.00) under their President Ann Wood, have donated 100€ to the Scanner Appeal. We are extremely grateful to the Table Tennis Club for their generosity.

THANK YOU

This month our Group Co-ordinator, Jacqueline Land, decided to step down from the post. After two years of hard work and dedication Jacquie has decided the time is right for her to hand over the responsibility of running the Group to another volunteer, Jacquie will however, continue to be an active volunteer within the Group.

It was just over two years ago that Jacquie took up the challenge to launch a Cancer Support Group covering the Mazarron area, having recently lost her husband Jacquie was determined to ensure that other people who had been diagnosed with cancer would not find themselves facing the same problems and emotional frustrations that she and her husband had encountered. So, with just 200 Euros, a donated mobile phone and a group of willing volunteers MABS came to Mazarron.

From such humble beginnings it is difficult to imagine that the group would become so successful - helping and supporting many local cancer sufferers and their families. Today we have over 40 volunteers; a car (fully paid for) to take patients to and from appointments; a range of comprehensive information leaflets on all types of cancer and a host of sponsors.

None of this would have been possible without the passion, dedication and sheer determination of Jacquie and that small group of volunteers. We wish you well in the future and THANK YOU so very much.

Jacquie's final task before handing over the reins was to accept a cheque 11,600 Euros from Marion Hosking, organiser of the 'Race for Life'. A huge 'Thank you' to Marion and her team for organising the event and to all the participants of the race, which took place in October.

Our new Group Co-ordinator is Joy Wilby. Joy has been a volunteer with the group for approximately eighteen months and currently undertakes the training of our volunteers. Joy worked within a number of charitable
organisations in the U.K before moving to Spain 6 years ago and became co-founder of the Puerto de Mazarron Ladies Circle.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with cancer and would like some confidential help and support please call our Help Line 620 422 410.

For general enquiries about our services please call our Enquiry Line 620 582 418 (Mon - Fri 11.00 to 4.00). If you are interested in our work and would like to become a volunteer please call our Enquiry Line or come along to one of our meetings.

Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday in the month at Pizzeria Trevi, Commercial Centre 'B', Camposol at 10.00 am.
