Tonmawr
is a small kennel which was established in the late 1970's with the arrival of :

Chatwig Chamarel of Tonmawr ( Ziggy)

DOB 14/5/79
Samarkands Skytrain x Chatwig Sweet Charity.

Our love affair with whippets began in the late1970's when our son was about nine years of age and wanted a dog. Although both of us had pet dogs when younger we thought he was a little young and told him he could have a dog when he was older.
When he was eleven years of age we consented to him having a puppy and then had to decide on a breed!

An uncle had owned a whippet cross bedlington, the dog followed the appearance of the whippet. In fact it looked just like a fawn whippet and was an easy dog to live with and keep clean, hence the decision that we would get a whippet.

The puppy we purchased was born on a farm and we had the pick of the litter.
For some reason we chose the smallest, a parti coloured dog, small in stature but big in heart, who feared nothing. Very soon we began to learn about showing and after taking him to a few shows we discovered he was not show quality.

We had by this time caught the showing bug and it was approximately nine months later that we purchased Chatwig Chamarel of Tonmawr from Mrs Francis Charles. Ziggy, as she was called, took over and the two of them were the greatest companions and lived out their old age with us.

At the time, our son, was also interested in showing and did very well at Junior Handling.
He can be seen below, showing Ziggy, winning Best Junior Handler at The Whippet Club of Wales
with the judge Mr D Meakin and the late Mrs Poppy Martin who was the President.

Ziggy was campaigned during the early 80's and obtained her studbook number.
Work commitments prevented breeding however one litter was born to her,
sired by Ch Dondelayo Bandelero, she produced three puppies.
A male, Tonmawr Tornado, was lightly campaigned by us
and a bitch, Tonmawr Topgal, was purchased by the late Mrs Anne Knight.
Unfortuantely Topgal broke her leg and was unable to be shown.

For a number of years showing was on hold
however my interest in the breed was maintained
partly by serving on the Committees of The Whippet Club of Wales
where I have been a Committee member for many years
and of which I am currently the President
.
