Sportshall Competition - Round 3
Ten stalwarts from RAC attended the Sportshall Competition at Newark on Sunday. The athletes gave some brilliant performances and it was great to have a relay team in the under 11 girls. Everyone seemed to have an enjoyable morning. There was an improvement in the overall result and RAC finished in 5th place. We look forward to the next competition on December 16th when there will be a festive theme with everyone wearing Santa hats. Results
RAC Cross Country Development Day
Glynn Tromans, international cross country athlete, inter-counties winner and Reebok Challenge Title Holder led a most informative day for athletes and coaches within Nottinghamshire.
The day commenced with Glynn outlining his career noting the stepping stones which led to his success, He explained his training schedule identifying the different aspects of training which need to be covered to ensure an all round programme. His overall message was Train Smart and Train Hard.
Jane and Juliet Potter also attended the session and shared their experiences as athletes who have represented England. They led a warm up session before the main training part of the day. Glynn reminded everyone that drills should be done correctly or there was no point in doing them.
Glynn led a fartlek training session, showing how this session could be used to develop athletes of any age and is an important part of a cross country training programme.
The importance of a cool down was stressed and all the athletes did a cool down before retiring to the club house for soup and hot dogs.
Everyone, athletes and coaches, took something away from the session and hopefully will share the ideas with their clubs and other athletes who were unable to attend.
National Road Relays
A bright, frosty morning in Sutton park was the setting for the National Road Relays. The conditions were perfect for distance running and the park was a picture of Autumnal beauty. Rushcliffe AC entered at team of three in the under 13 girls race. The standard was very high and our girls were not over-awed and worked hard for each other. The course distance was 3.861km, nearly twice the distance this age group usually runs at cross country. Hannah Robinson ran the first leg in a very good time of 16.43, Molly Uren ran the next leg in 20.11 and Alice Desforges finished off with 18.20. It should be noted that both Molly and Alice are in their first year in this age group. Out of 62 starting teams Rushcliffe AC finished in 51st place with a total time of 55.14 for 11.583km.
International athlete to lead RAC Development Day
Sue Todd and others have been working very hard organising a coaching event with a difference - A Cross Country Development Day. They have managed to get one of the UK's top Cross Country athletes, Glynn Tromans, to lead the event and, if you are 13 or older you are invited to attend. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from an athlete of international class. The event is on Saturday 27th October at Berryhill Park Mansfield.
Congratulations to the Famous Five!
Five members of RAC represented the Club at the Sportshall competition at Newark on Sunday 14th October. Despite a very disappointing turn out Eleanor and Catrina Hogg, Emily Doyle, Thomas Dobson and Richard Perkins gave brilliant performances and their enthusiasm made up for the lack of numbers. Silver medals for Rushcliffe pair
On their debuts in Combined Events, Sean Perkins (U17) and Laura Billam (U15) both won silver medals in the open competition at the Yorkshire Combined Events Championships. Sean competed in a field of 11 athletes in U17 Mens Octathlon and Laura in a field of 22 in the U15 Girls Pentathlon at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Cudworth on 22nd and 23rd September. In achieving a total of 3715 points, just 11 points short of the winner of the open, Sean secured the Club record and gained 4 PBs. Laura gathered a total of 2311 breaking the Club record of 2225 held since May 1999 by Joanne Reade. In doing so Laura also set 4 PBs and broke the Club records for High Jump and Shot Put. Next season Sean moves up to U20 and the decathlon whilst Laura remains with Pentathlon in her second year at U15. Coach Derek John has a hard winter training schedule lined up for them and feels that both are well capable of building on this excellent foundation.
