Stories of Strength edited by Jenna Glatzer

With more than 100 pieces from writers all over the world, and the gracious efforts of prominent editors and graphic designers, Stories of Strength is a tribute to the human spirit: celebrating true stories of courage and endurance in challenging situations that range from the death of a child to living through natural disasters, to smaller-scale trials, like dealing with returning an overdue book to the local Library Troll.

Headed by Jenna Glatzer, author of acclaimed Celine Dion biography For Keeps, this project attracted contributions from many well-known writers, including a story and an original hymn by award-winning science fiction novelist Orson Scott Card, an essay by famed actor Wil Wheaton (Star Trek, Stand By Me), and a short story from Christian romance author Robin Lee Hatcher.

Books by Frankie Lassut: Excommunicated Priest. Wanted by the CIA, the FBI but, unfortunately, not the BBC!

Frankie Lassut is a writer who writes exactly what comes into his mind. It's usually zany comedy, and a lot of the time it has a cynical line or two in it, which is unacceptable to publishers and 99.99% of people he has given free copies of stuff to (most of them never make contact again with feedback or mention it if he runs into them). Never mind, he carries on relentlessly. In the end, he gave up on publishers and agents, and decided to self-publish. His books aren't the thickest in the world as he can't afford that (is there a sexual pun there about how thickness doesnt matter?), so he produces on demand booklets he calls Wonky Novlets that can be ordered on his site. He has managed six up to now. If you would like a good laugh, click on this link and check them out:

Children's Novels

Matthew and the Highland Rescue by Sabine Muir

If you've never visited Loch Kinord on the edge of the Scottish Highlands, then Sabine Muir's novel will transport you there. If you have, then you will recognise and take great pleasure in reading about an area of Scotland steeped in ancient history. Matthew's adventure through time, back to the eleventh century, is shared with his two young cousins, Rory and Morag. The three children have a great time in the court of King Malcolm III of Scotland and his kind-hearted wife, Margaret, where they rediscover more than just lost time. This is a cracking read, thoroughly absorbing and highly recommendable to adults as well as children.

The Little House On the Corner by H. J. Simmons

The Little House on the Corner is a wonderful children's book that will hold the interest of any child. While reading this book, the reader can identify with the storyteller's innocence and love for life. Children that read this book may very likely begin to appreciate the wonderful things they have in their life, without even realizing it. This is a very touching tale that teaches a very simple lesson to all its young readers. Most of us forget how important our family members are to us and that spending quality time with them does not compare to any item that can be bought in a store.ÊIn my opinion, I think this book should occupy a space on every child's bookshelf.

The Listening Tree by Joyce Ann Edmondson

The Listening Tree Fifty Stories of Grace-full Everyday Living" are the author's attempt to share from her experience and imagination stories of faith, hope, and love with a broader audience. A second goal is to give an inspirational format for parents, teachers, or grandparents who may wish to share memories and values with their own children or teenagers by writing or telling family stories. Parents or grandparents who find themselves in a situation where they must provide most of the exposure to Christian values for their children or grandchildren can benefit from knowing they are not alone in their journey, but have Christ with them every step of the way. By retelling stories children can identify with enables parents or grandparents to pass on the values they believe in. At the same time it assists children to choose books with similar content when they do learn to read or write.

Is Your Father Black? by Joseph Frank Baraba

When Marie Brault's daughter, Maggie, wheedles her way back into the family home after marrying a layabout young man, who fails to keep a roof over his young wife's and daughter's head, she fails to show her mother any love or respect. Maggie, who respects no-one, seems to be incapable of love and, of Marie's five sons, Joey, Alfred, Bill, John and Barney Douglas Jr., only Joey shows any real affection for his mother. The title of the book, "Is Your Father Black?" suggests that the Brault family's problems are caused by Marie Brault's second marriage to Barney Douglas but the narrative shows that the Brault children's biggest problem is themselves.

Timothy's Take-Out by Paul J. Barker.

You think YOUR job sucks??? Meet Carl Fellows. Meet him, and pity him. The man has ambition. The man has potential So what's he doing trapped in a dead-end job? Try to envision it: A shy, sensitive young loner becomes "personnel manager" of what could well be the busiest, noisiest, most disgusting fast food joint on the face of the earth — TIMOTHY'S TAKE-OUT. Children taunt him, adults belittle him, and his staff show up for work pretty much when they feel like it. Our hero tries to convert all this negativity into "positivity", and his efforts are hilarious if not altogether successful. Less hilarious is the fact that he is slowly becoming a misanthrope.

Goldie by Saundra Julian and her daughter Molly Jones

Rarely does a book come around that captures the imagination of the reader like GOLDIE does. Set in Oklahoma during the days of Prohibition, Goldie is a beautiful teenager on the brink of womanhood being raised in a poor but loving family with strong values. The story follows the highs and lows of Goldie's life and her experiences of love, sorrow, friendship, and enemies as she struggles against opposition to keep her family together. Goldie is a story that will touch your heart and leave you wanting more. I applaud Saundra Julian and Molly Jones for their realistic, yet sensitive portrayal of the subjects of bootlegging, Mafia and the KKK. I certainly look forward to reading more from these two rising stars.

Unspoken Dream by Carol Bennett

Carol Bennett writes a stunning mystery-thriller. Her chilling entrance is one I have encountered only rarely in a book. Pandemonium - A Journey to the New World by Apina Hrbek

Pandemonium - A Journey to the New World is an incredible true story about the impact of the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia on three generations of a prominent Prague family. Told from the perspective of Edita, a physician's daughter, scientist's wife, and mother of two young children, the story poignantly describes the insanity, frustration, and desperation associated with living under a corrupt communist regime. Many of the scenes are unforgettable; they range from comic to heartrending to bittersweet.

The Engineer's Daughter by Mary V. Williams

"I left home for the second time at the age of forty-seven. It was five o'clock on a freezing Sunday morning in January and nobody was about. My mother, who always rose early, was dead. The funeral had been in October; now it was New Year and a terrible madness had settled upon the family. My brother was, I imagined, locked in his bedroom as he always was, vigilant; still waiting for my mother's call. I warmed my hands on the Aga and rooted around for a biro in the kitchen drawer. I left a note for my brother telling him that I wasn't staying where I wasn't welcome and to please give back the things my mother had left me in her will. Then I stepped out into the icy darkness... The Private Lives of Teachers by Joseph A. Wellman

"A life beyond the classroom" is the plot of this novel. It's the story of teachers and their private world, the world beyond the classroom, the world most of us never see even though they're in front of us fourteen to eighteen years of our lives. We think we know them but all we know is an image, because in most stories about teachers the lives of students is emphasized. This novel is different. Set in a suburban high school, this novel features the stories of teachers and their lives that takes place beyond the classroom.

The Jade Chalice by Rudolph J. Girandola

The Jade Chalice, in fiction, lifts a veil obscuring historic reasons why the Roman Catholic Church must today pay the price of worldwide clergy scandals. The fictional characters endure a Church, in 1938, that refuses to look into itself regardless of finding, even then, shocking revelations of homosexuality, pedophilia, adultery, and fornication. The Jade Chalice underscores the vulnerability of clergy and religious training. It describes a system built on absolute authority over its faithful and its aversion for reform. It questions a widening disparity of Faith with Protestants, Asians, Arabs and Jews over doctrine and avenues for salvation. The Jade Chalice is a classic novel delving also into Chinese history and culture. The Jade Chalice portrays a story of Catholicism's mystery, beauty, power and weaknesses, concluding that no one is immune to personal human passions, especially those men and women who claim to hold in their hands the only hope for spiritual and eternal reward.

Didn't See It Coming by Laura W. Somers

Warning: This book stands as a protest against the millions of novels that obligingly give female characters "ample breasts" and "legs that go on forever." Both critical and comical, Didn't See It Coming presents the story of Hillary Strife, a woman whose quirky methods of fighting boredom and failure lead her down an engrossing path of discovery and destruction. Faced with toxic relationships, sexual harassment, and the eventual unraveling of her life as a mother, Hillary allows others to slap her soul silly. She seeks perverse gratification in an effort to strike a balance between tolerance and all-out revolt. You'll find Didn't See It Coming carries messages worthy of a time capsule about our era.

Surviving the Single Dad Syndrome by Kevin James

This book is written for guys. Women may also be interested in reading this text searching for clues to the elusive male psyche. Since men and women began to form words some 20,000 years ago, there has been a gap in communication for the most part, between men and women and how they relate to each other. Simply we all have the same needs but communicating how those needs are to be met may cause some dissension. It's interesting that we may speak the same language as our mates, English, Spanish, or whatever, but the amount of miscommunication, or non-communication is amazing. Why is it that we use the same alphabet, the same words and phrasing do we not understand what the opposite sex is attempting to convey?

It's Just My Opinion by J. Michael Grisanti

This is a story of my perceptions of life in Canada. It is also about the unique way the Canadian people view life here and visitors. There is a section there on the physical, mental and sexual abuse that my wife and her family suffered at the hand of her, now deceased, father. In this you will see how the local authorities didn't seem to care about it, when it was reported. There is also a part about when my stepdaughter was sexually harrassed by a 30 year old neighbor, the police blamed her mother and it took them two days to even come out and take a report. Nothing was done about it by the way and the man is still living in the same apartment complex with a lot of young children.

Jody and I had been married a little over a year and looked forward to starting a family. We embraced the perfection our "Angel baby" would bring into our lives. Every time I held an infant, I envisioned the day I would hold my own baby. In anticipation of a quick conception, I started a journal to my Angel baby. However, instead of a quick conception, we faced years of infertility. Empty Arms — A Heavy Load to Carry documents the struggles we faced.

In This Valley I Grew, Life on Blacklog and Happy Hollow by Mary Ellen Goble Preece

In This Valley I Grew is my own story of growing up in the fifties and sixties in a small Appalachian neighborhood on the outskirts of a town called Inez, population 500. It is a story of hardships, innocence, and faith. It describes the people who lived all around me who in some way or other helped shape and mold my life into what it is today. I can honestly say truthfully, that there isn't one person in my childhood that left such a negative impression on me that I'd rather not remember him or her. It is my prayer that those of you who read my stories, get the feeling that I am just talking to you face to face, in a relaxed way, recounting the events of my life, as I remember them and that you find yourself reliving them with me, or better yet that they bring back to your memory, things that you had long forgotten, and that a smile might cross your lips, and make your day a little brighter. If you don't like sentiment then you probably won't like this book for that is the only way I know how to tell it, through the eyes of love as I saw it and through my heart's emotions as I felt them.

Historical Biography
The King's Quinto: The Life and Times of Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) by Barbara O'Sullivan

This very readable book chronicles the life and political career of one of Tudor England's most colourful characters. Miss O'Sullivan explores the political situation in England and in Europe, which formed a background to Raleigh's life. She also quotes directly from contemporary documents and looks at the realities of day-to-day life in Tudor times, the coinage, the food and personal hygiene. Told through the voice of Raleigh's personal servant, John Talbot, this book is an interesting addition to the considerable literature on a fascinating player at the Court of Queen Elizabeth.

Memoirs

Normandy 1944: A Young Rifleman's War by Dick Stodghill

This is the Battle of Normandy, neither glamorized nor sanitized, as seen from ground level during the bloody summer of 1944 — the personal experiences of an 18-year-old 4th Infantry Division rifleman who joined his company shortly after D-Day. He quickly came to admire and respect the men of G Company, then was close by as one by one many of them died during the horrific fighting in the fields and streets of a normally beautiful and tranquil land. Here are the realities of that war: opening the casualty blanket rolls, seeing the dead being buried in mattress covers, the sounds, the smells and the fears of men in infantry combat. A glimpse, too, of the boys who fought the battles of World War II as they grew up or matured during the Great Depression, the rigors of infantry basic training, life in England in the weeks leading up to D-Day.

The Other Casualty Of War by Paul J. Bylin

I had awakened into in a nightmare when I arrived in Vietnam. I was in a place where there was no respect, no decency, only chaos and confusion. This is not where I wanted to be. It was a constant fear that overcame me. Later, that fear turned to something else. I'm not sure what it was, maybe hatred, or maybe survival mode kicked in. No matter what it was, it was something that brought me from my boyish thoughts of girls and cars to a man, killing and surviving. This is not how I had pictured my life to be.

Visions of the Soul by Samia Muqueem

Throughout life we store information collected from experiences and try in some way to make sense of it. When we are not able to fully understand the things that occur in our lives, we often externalize the information. By doing this, we are afforded a different perspective, thus allowing us to think more clearly about difficult or perplexing events and emotions. Art is one of the ways in which we choose to externalize our thoughts. Within the arts, needs of expression differ, but poetry is a very powerful tool by which we can share sometimes confusing, sometimes perfectly clear, concepts and feelings with others.

Flames of a Rose by Lorna Joy Knox (nee Ramsamugh)

In a time when all poetry falls into aimless free verse patterns, a return to form and structure is always appreciated, even unique. Flames of a Rose is the debut collection of author Lorna Joy Knox (nee Ramsamugh). As the title implies, the stories focus on love, both romantic and familial, as the author pulls us on a whirlwind journey through life in all of its complexities.

Unscrambled Eggs by Nadia Brown

Can you really unscramble an egg? The answer is: No. Though, we often try to retrace our steps, go back in the file cabinets of our memory and clean our mistakes. We tell ourselves if we could only wash our past like laundry then everything would be fine. The problem with that is that you can't undo what has already been done. Life is not a chalkboard where you can go back and erase errors that were previously made. And that is what the title Unscrambled Eggs tries to convey. When you dwell on failures and what happened in the past, doing so only serves to hold your future in doubt.

My Steady Catchphrase: Book of Poetry by Corey Daniels

In My Steady Catchphrase: Book of Poetry, I express my beliefs and dreams through a collection of fascinating poetry. Many of my poems deal with common emotions. These poems are expressions of failure, misunderstanding, and gratification. A focus on change and growth is particularly dominant in this collection: every step, every mile makes me conscious of how I have matured, how I am growing and how I am not my similar self I once was. I work through a number of personal changes with my unique writing style. The structure of the poems in this collection is one that is slightly complex, but my viewpoints are simple to understand.

The events that transpire keep you on the edge of your seat trying to solve the mystery that is behind it all since no one feels Angel should be made aware of the real dangers that lie ahead or where they stem from.
