All in the Game

In the best kept village of sixty-two,
The Iddons decided to have a bit of a do
After the match on the village green,
Where the noble game of rugby ne'er before had been seen.

The score was even with only minutes to go,
When Elsie tackled Uncle Albert and broke his toe;
They needed a sub as they called for a stretcher,
When on drove Johnny Cash on his Big Yellow Tractor.

Dave side stepped the tractor and scorched down the wing,
But was caught in The Cow Trap and decided to sing
About the maul that formed from the collapsing ruck,
As the ball squirted forward and hit a passing duck.

With the ball tucked under his wing the duck went for the try,
Though it was clear to see that Ducks Can't Fly;
As the duck went down, the ball went forward,
'No accident,' cried the ref. and a penalty was awarded.

The kick was taken with only seconds to go,
But the ball hit the post and the crowd shouted 'no'
So, did Murphy fail or was it just sheer fate,
As the ball toppled over not a second too late?

The winners were elated at the end of the game,
The losers were deflated, but couldn't take the blame
Because they gave their all and the result was fair,
And I remember it all because I Was There.
