Ep’th folk
Ep’th
Folk meets on alternate Mondays at the Old School
House Inn, Battle Green, Epworth,
The club is in the main for local
singers, operating predominantly in a singaround
format, but we do book occasional local guests and
once in a while big names when funds permit. The highlight of
2005 being the 18th. April when we booked Archie
Fisher.
We have a choice of two rooms which are separate from
the bar and totally acoustic so quiet ballads can be heard in a peaceful
atmosphere.
We encourage traditional folk music but, depending on
when you come, you could hear the songs of Paxton, Dylan etc. Classical guitar. Ragtime, blues and flamenco in fact most
kinds of acoustic music, all of this played on a multiplicity of instruments,
and unaccompanied of course.
We are on the ground floor so the club is
wheelchair friendly.

EP'TH FOLK was spawned on the 31st. October 1986, Hallow'een,
at the Mowbray
Arms when two friends discussed the possibility of performing live music on
Friday nights, after a professional rehearsal band attracted few listeners,
even though it was free entrance.
One of these
founders was Eric Payne who still runs Epth Folk, as
it is known today, and the other was Pete Horsted a trombonist
in the band. He was of the opinion that there was no interest in live music
any more but it was decided to press ahead and see if we could get a folk club
going. Expectations were not high but we thought that if we got about twenty
enthusiasts to attend that was,
as much as we could hope for. In the event, it was panic stations when 60 lusty singers descended on the Red Lion pub
in the centre of Epworth, a number from Scunthorpe folk club which was thriving at the time.
Large numbers
continued to attend for about 2 years
when the pub was knocked about and a night club was opened. Pete had left by
this time so Eric moved the club to the Mowbray, which,
after a few years was also altered, so we moved to The
Old School Inn. This in it’s turn was altered so we
went back the Red Lion where we stayed for about two years until difficulties
arose and we returned to the Old School where we have been ever since that
date.
