BERLIN GETS NFL
EUROPE FRANCHISE
July 1988
THE NFL Europe League
has announced that Berlin will field a team next season. The news was broken
at a press conference at World Bowl '98 and means that
Germany will have
three franchises in the organisation in 1999.
As yet unnamed, the franchise's first general manager will be Michael Lang, who is well known in Germany as a TV commentator with DSF.
They will play their debut campaign in a 20,000 seat arena and eventually hope to move into the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium once the demand is great enough.
NFL Europe bosses have yet to decide whether there will be six or seven teams in 1999. NFL president Neil Austrian said a decision will be made within the next two weeks.
They could relocate an existing franchise to Berlin and maintain the current six team structure or move to seven clubs with a longer season which would feature bye weeks.
NFL Europe chiefs
also revealed that the playoff structure used this season would remain
with a pre-announced World Bowl site and a finale which would feature the
top two clubs.
