RESIGNS AS HEAD COACH

LIONEL TAYLOR has resigned as head coach of the England Monarchs, the NFL Europe League announced on Thursday.He stood down from his position after the Monarchs posted a 3-7 record during the 1998 season, their fifth straight losing season.
Taylor, who joined the Monarchs as offensive co-ordinator in 1995 and moved up to head coach two games into the 1996 season, said: "I have enjoyed my time with the Monarchs, even though I have been disappointed at our results on the field. I felt it was best for me and the team to make a change. The Monarchs have a loyal set of fans and I would like to thank them for the support they have given me and the team through some difficult times. I wish my successor every success."
NFL Europe president Oliver Luck commented: "I would like to thank Lionel for four years of service to the league. He has been very popular with the players and the fans, and I would like to wish him well for the future."
Taylor was the all-time leading receiver in Denver Broncos history before winning two Super Bowl rings as an offensive assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
