Chikara Nunchaku seminar, Pensby 28th October 2007

Chikara ran a kobudo seminar that introduced new students to the Okinawan weapon the "Nunchaku" or rice-flail. It also proved to be an excellent revision session for some who had some previous experience but had not had much time to practice. It attracted students of all ages, junior students used foam safety nunchakus.
Sensei Mark spent the early part of the class explaining the basics and safety aspects of using the weapon. As anyone who has had some previous expeience will know, the nunchaku (an articulated club!) has a mind of its own and if not treated with respect will catch you out and leave you a bit sore !!
This was then followed by kihon-waza, basic manipulation of the nunchaku around the body and some furi-waza (swinging strikes). Sensei Dave stepped in and extended the basics leading on to the first kata (Nikon Kamae no kata).
The session ended up with sensei Mark and sensei Dave demonstrating two more advanced kata to the whole class.
The seminar was enjoyed by everyone and we plan to hold a second nunchaku seminar early in the New Year. It is also likely that a similar  introductory seminar will be planned in around Easter 2008 for the short staff or "Jo". The latter will have a reduced number of students due to the amount of space required so you will need to book in early !
