A day trip to Cahors is also highly recommended - only 20 miles away along the picturesque road hugging the River Lot. Wander through the medieval streets and admire the amazing Pont de Valentre - one of the oldest fortified bridges remaining in France. |
About the same distance in the other direction along the River Célé is the town of Figeac.
Figeac is home to the Champollion museum dedicated to the Egyptologist who deciphered the Rosetta Stone - who was born in the town in the 19th century.
Rocamadour is well worth a visit - a spectacular monastery high in the cliffs above the Dordogne valley.
It is the second most popular tourist destination in France after Le Mont St Michel and has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries.
Further afield, the rose coloured buildings and charming shopping streets of Montauban and Toulouse make for enjoyable retail therapy - should you need it!
