Sophie Davey, one of our talented endurance runners
tried her hand at the shorter stuff , recording decent times in the 300m, 52.69
and 100m, 15.4 Four of the other girls in the club took part in the 100m sprint
races; Tanya Marriot 14.88, Jade Hawkins 14.7, Phoebe Davey 15.57, and Stef
Hemsworth 16.11. Titch Harwood put a lot of effort into the 400m and
recorded a good time of 77.13
In the long jump, Myshka Hall (2.63m) and Ashe DeSousa (2.95m) battled it out
and both recorded creditable jumps. At the end of the 4 match series, Sidmouth finished
sixth out of nine clubs, which was brilliant considering it was the first time
the junior runners at the club had competed in this league. It was to their
credit that they put a lot into their performances, but never forgot to have a
laugh and enjoy the competition. The new Long Term Athlete Development course for
juniors started last Wednesday and is now full. However, there is a waiting
list and should you require more details please phone Malcolm Bayer on 01404

If you can't be there, have a fantastic break - Janet 14 July 2008 . . . from Malcolm . . . On Wednesday September 10th 2008 we shall be changing the format of the "Wednesday group". It will be focusing on your long term athletic development. This will involve running and training in smaller groups, and will give your coaches the opportunity to develop and encourage your enthusiasm for running and athletics. I will give you more information over the summer, but the key point is that you will need to register for the first 6 week block of training, so that I can place athletes in the right training group before the 10th September. To ensure adequate child welfare measures are in place, we will not be accepting anyone on the night who hasn't registered by then. If you miss the boat, you will go on a waiting list, until a place becomes available. I will send out a letter in the next two weeks with a pro-forma attached which should be returned to me asap. LTAD is an exciting development for the club, and hopefully will lead to plenty of fine runners emerging in the future. But before then please note the following: Wednesday 16th July 2008. The junior runners of Sidmouth Running Club travelled to the Brookfields Athletics track in Plymouth on Sunday, for the first South West Athletics League fixture if the season. This is the first time the club has competed in a full track and field event. Whilst we are principally a running club, the event gives an opportunity for our athletes to try out different field events to compliment their running. As the new kids on the block,
we were placed in the 2nd Division of the League, and were up
against teams such as Bath A.C. who have the luxury of training in a Uk
Athletics Centre of Excellence”,
compared to our humble training grounds, The Byes, East Hill Strips and Mutters
Moor! Not surprisingly, the
competition was of a high standard, but our athletes rose to the challenge and
competed strongly. Track and field events always have lots going on and it is
some challenge for the coach to ensure that all athletes are ready for their
specific events throughout the day. Events such as this always
rely on volunteers to officiate over the recording of times and lengths of
throws and jumps. Thanks go to Mick Allen, John Perratt and Bill Valentine for
helping out at the track. Events start at 11.30, and in
one of the earliest races Sam Withers had a fine 3000ms and finished 3rd (12.14) ,with Nathan Carpenter just
behind in 4th. (12.22). In the same event for under 15 boys; Titch
Harwood finished 5th in 11.27 just ahead of Kit Grierson in 11.40.
Zak Francis milked the applause of the crowd in the home straight to finish in
14.03. In the 100m Tanya Marriot and
Kelsey Fitzgerald ran similar times, 15.4 and 15.5 respectively. Phoebe Davey
crossed the line in 15.9. The 100ms for under 17 women saw Sophie Davey come
home in 14.7 and Ettie Shattock in 14.8. In the 200ms Sophie and Georgina
Trivett recorded exactly the same time, 31.4 seconds. The 1500m race for under13
boys had Tom Norris battling it out for a gutsy 4th place in 5.36
and Grey Grierson just behind in 6th (5.44). Nick Smith finished 8th
in 5.57. In the 1500ms for under 15 girls, Georgia Hanson had a fine race to
finish 4th in 6.08. As is usual in Track and
Field, the relays are at the end of the day’s programme, and as the heavens
opened our relay teams of Ashe DeSousa, Jessica Jenkins, Myshka Hall and
Georgia Hanson for the girls, and Tom, Jake Hawkins, Grey, and Nick did well to
get the baton round in wet conditions. A creditable performance by both teams. In the field events, Grey
finished 2nd in the javelin with a tremendous throw of 18,58ms and
likewise Jessica Jenkins threw an impressive 16.94ms and finished 3rd
in a strong field. New to the long jump were Kelsie Bernard, Georgia Sage and
Alex Salmon, they all enjoyed it and recorded creditable jumps, 2.86m, 2.47 and
2.71 respectively. In the under 17 women’s long jump, Ettie Shattock finished
second with a fine 3.92ms. This has been an important
building block in the long term development of our athletes and we are looking
forward to the next fixture at Yeovil on the 25th May 2008. If you
would like any information on the Junior's section at Sidmouth Running Club,
then give Malcolm Bayer a ring on 01404 812186. 31 March 2008..... from Janet..... Saturdays 5th and 19th April are at Core Copse again but please note that there will be no session on the week in between (the 12th). I am very pleased to say also that the Sport Relief Run held with the main club added a further £129.32 to the kitty, bringing our total up to £180.60. Well Done and a big Thank You to everyone that helped raise that generous amount. Back to Core Copse..... Janet is very happy to say that we have been given the All Clear and so will be running from Core Copse once again starting on Saturday 29 March 2008 at 9.00 a.am. See you there! 17 March 2008......from Janet.... What a wet morning for our run for Sports relief but it did not stop us and we ran the mile, with Nick and Christian running in under 6.30 mins. We more importantly raised £51.28 for those these fortunate than ourselves. So well done everyone. We will be meeting up on Peak Hill next week at 9am, March 22nd for a good run and maybe a chocolate treat or two. Have a good week -Janet
11 Mar 2008 . . .
from Janet . . . On Saturday morning ( 15 th ) we will meet on Salcombe Hill at 9am as usual but it will be in fancy dress. Money will be donated to Sports Relief, so please make sure your parents are in a generous mood. It gets busy in the car park so it may be better if your parents drop you and then park the cars on the road if they plan to stay. All welcome!

from Malcolm . . . GRIZZLY RUNNERS OF THE FUTURE?
The last of the Ironbridge Runner Winter 3k series
took place at Exeter Arena last Wednesday. Sidmouth Running Club had 22 of its
junior members taking part on a fine evening at the track.
As usual the starter for the evening was the mile
race for under 11s. Club photographer and web site Ubermeister Chris Woodcock
needed a wide angle lens to get all the green vests of our runners on the start
line. Grey Grierson won the race with a splendid performance in a personal best
time of 6.11. Other club runners who got a PB were Georgia Hanson (8th),
Jack Scrivens (7th) and Will Jenkins (3rd). There were five races in the 3k series, and the first
of these saw Hannah Jenkins give a strong performance in her first race for the
club finishing 9th. Stef Hemsworth and Phoebe Davey took a more
leisurely approach to the race but still finished 10th and 11th.
However Stef did really well to finish 3rd in the overall series for
the F13 category. The next race once again showed the strength of
Andrew Green who went into the lead from the start much to the consternation of
his coach, but stayed there for practically the whole race winning in fine
style, with a PB of 11.52. Sophie Davey did a PB as well, finishing 14th
in 12.48. Tom Norris and Kit Grierson took part in a very fast
race with 18 other runners. Tom did brilliantly to finish 3rd and
with a PB of 11.15. Kit also stormed round to finish 8th and a PB of
11.26. Luke Rutter may have ended up in a group of very fast senior athletes
but he did him self proud to record a PB of 11.46. For all results choose the link on the Hews Page. 3 Mar 2008 . . .

Juniors are meeting at Exeter Arena this Wednesday for the last of the winter 3k / mile series.
Many of you are in with a shout for a prize, so it should be an exciting evening.

SIDMOUTH JUNIORS BURN UP THE TRACK . . . from Malcolm . . .
Last Wednesday the juniors from Sidmouth Running Club
were out in force at the 3rd round of the Ironbridge Runner 3k
Series at Exeter Arena.
It was a brilliant evening for distance running as it
was cool but without the usual wind down the back straight. The track looked
ready for some outstanding running, and it was not to be disappointed,
especially from our own runners. To start off the evening, the younger runners have a
chance to shine in the 1mile race. Twenty runners lined up for this, including
nine from the club. Grey Grierson gave his usual gutsy performance to finish 3rd
in 6.26. Nick Smith in his new running shoes came in strongly in 5th
(6.31), closely followed by the ever improving Georgia Hanson (1st Girl) in 6th (6.35). New to the race were Jack Scrivens 8th
(6.36), Sam Marriot 11th (6.46) and Jacob Garrick 12th
(6.48). Jake Hawkins was just behind in 13th (6.56). Emily Maskill
(7.15) and Kate Welsford (7.28)
finished 16th and 18th respectively. The 3k series is great, because it pit’s the running
abilities of junior, senior and veteran runners all together in one race, and
of course the juniors love to beat the more experienced runners in the county.
Tom Norris was running his first race for Sidmouth and finished first by some
distance in the “E” race in a rather swift 11.41! First lady home in this race
was Jessica Jenkins who ran brilliantly to finish in third place (13.09) and was
also making her debut for the club. Steph Hemsworth gets faster and faster and
finished 4th (13.24).
Natalie Bagwell did really well in her first race to finish 8th
in (14.36). Charlie Scrivens did a PB
(15.15) in 12th position. But perhaps the run of the night was by Andrew Green
who only just finished 2nd to an experienced runner from Exmouth. Andrew
stormed round the last lap closing all
the time and was only one second behind at the line. Andrew took nearly half a
minute off his previous best by doing 11.54. The vibrant Ellie Stone went off
with the fast boys and ended up paying for it, but still with a respectable
time of 12.54. Kit Grierson stormed
round the “C” race to finish 8th in 11.41 in a strong field. The final race of the series is on 5th
March 2008, when the green vests of Sidmouth will once again be challenging for
the age prize categories. It looks as though Core Copse is not going to be fit for us to meet there for some time, so here are the meeting places for the next few Saturdays - meet 9am as usual. 9th Feb - Donkey Sanctuary car park, turn left into main entrance, over a cattle grid and first left, please park at top end of the car park nearest the road. 16th Feb - White Cross Crossroads, at the Sidmouth end of East Hill Strips. 23rd Feb - Week off. 1st March - Peak Hill, Mutter's Moor car park. 8th March - Tipton St John. Any enquiries please phone me on 01395 516169 or 0785 4080740 WEDNESDAY 6TH FEBRUARY 2008 SOUTH WEST ATHLETICS LEAGUE 2008 - DATES CONFIRMED As you know, we are now entered into Division 2 of the South West Athletics League, which should be an exciting challenge for all of us, especially those of you competing.
