Originally from Ireland, Mary Cummings came to Petworth when her husband, Michael Thomas, left the army. He had been a Farrier Sgt. Major in the Hussars and came to work as a farrier on the Leconfield Estate.
Mary worked as a seamstress at Petworth House and at home and the workroom in the museum is set up as a sewing room.
