Petworth Cottage Museum - Special Events

Heritage Open Day – Saturday 13th September 2008

The museum open as usual from 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Admission will be FREE FOR National Trust Visitors who must sign up for a timed tour starting from Petworth House. Normal admission charges will apply to visitors coming direct to the museum.

Hidden High Street – Whit Sunday 27th May 2007

10th Anniversay Appeal


More than ten years have gone by since Lord & Lady Egremont declared the museum open. Since then some 20,000 visitors of all ages, including many from overseas, have enjoyed its friendly welcome and nostalgic atmosphere. The cost of maintaining and running the museum has always exceeded its entry charges. The Petworth Cottage Trust appealed for donations to build up further its endowment fund so that our visitors can continue to enjoy for many more years. You can also help by becoming a Friend of the Cottage Museum – Friends receive unliimted free entry to the museum in return for an annual subscription. Anniversary Exhibition – Saturday 6th May 2006

To celebrate the history of the museum and the historical background of the Leconfield Estate, and of Mrs. Cummings and her family there was an exhibition in the Leconfield Hall, Market Square, Petworth.

Garden Opening at Somerset Lodge - 10th to 18th June 2006

Thanks very much to Mr. & Mrs. R. Harris who opened their garden under the National Gardens Scheme on the above dates. Proceeds from the sale of teas will benefit the Cottage Museum. Proceeds from the plant sale will be shared between the museum and the National Gardens Scheme.

Needlework Exhibition "Floral Splendour" – from 23rd September to 4th October 2006

and Associated Lectures

To celebrate Mrs. Cummings' occupation and her work at Petworth House, the Royal School of Needlework provided this exhibition at the National Trust's Exhibition Room in Petworth House.


On Friday 22nd September, Lars Tharp, ceramics expert from the BBC Antiques Roadshow, talked about floral ceramics at the Leconfield Hall, Petworth. This well attended event was organised by the Petworth Cottage Museum and sponsored by Barrington & Co., Estate Agents. Thanks to everyone who supported us.


On Monday 25th September, Dr. Lynn Hulse, archivist of the Royal School of Needlework, talked about the School's foundation, history and work, the Arts & Crafts movement and the Wyndham family's connections with the Royal School of Needlework. This was a Petworth Society event with the Petworth Cottage Museum.
