Silves and beyond...

Once the capital of the Algarve, Silves is a fascinating mix of small cobbled streets and shady squares. Everywhere there are signs of its Moorish past. Silves castle, the largest castle on the Algarve, is regarded by many as one of the best castles in Portugal, It's fascinating water system of giant cisterns has attracted attention from all over the world. From its walls you have a useful vantage point from which to view the rest of the city and the surrounding countryside of small farms and orange groves.
There are wonderful buildings to explore, from the Manueline cathedral, the beautifully decorated church to the town hall and the city museum. Visit the cafes on the riverfront or the cork museum at Fabriça do Ingles.
A not to be missed summer event is the Medieval fair in August. Small, individual stalls, spread out along the narrow cobbled streets, and lit by candles and lamps, sell handmade jewellery, pottery, dried fruit and cakes. A serious effort is made to ensure that everything is in keeping with the theme. Mead, wine, fresh homemade lemonade, suckling roast pig and other traditional dishes are served on clay or wooden platters.

algarve bed breakfast acommodation portugal " We both had a great time here. Mary and Les are very hospitable and knowledgeable about just about everything. The room was of great quality and tastefully decorated, with an amazing high ceiling. Everything around the house was very pleasant and tastefully done, so that we were able to totally unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life. Very relaxing and laid back, just what we needed!
