Welcome to Yarcombe.net
Yarcombe is a pretty
Devon village nestling in the
spectacular Yarty Valley with its steep
rolling meadows and ancient woods on the
south edge of the Blackdown Hills.
The village centre is small with its
historical Norman church, old inn with
monastical roots. hotel and cluster of
houses, but its many outlying farms and
hamlets make Yarcombe a large parish
with a very active community. We
can boast of several music and singing
groups, award winning amateur dramatics,
Saturday markets selling homemade
locally grown produce, rural crafts etc,
9 skittle
teams, WI, village hall activities,
flower and garden shows.
It is an extremely
friendly place and to quote a
newcomer to the village '...this is the
friendliest village I've ever known'.
Come and visit us and see
for yourself.
Yarcombe is a working
village with farming and agricultural
support services important for its way
of life and employment.
There are other small business' in the
community covering accommodation and
food, building and joinery, motor
services, furniture making, and rural
crafts.
Historically we have some
claim to fame. Earl Harold (as of
King) briefly owned the manor, prior to
his demise at the Battle of Hastings,
and much later in Elizabethan times the
ownership passed to Francis Drake.
Today one of his ancestors remains
squire of Yarcombe. There
was also infamy in the time of the
Hundred Years war when money was sent
from Yarcombe by its French owner to the
armies of France to fight the
English.
Yarcombe has many traditions : pig
and terrier racing, barrel rolling and
metal ball throwing.
For several years The East Devon Sheep
Dog trails have been held here in July.
It is close to the Devon/Somerset border
and not far from west Dorset. Nearest small
towns are Chard 5
miles, and Honiton 7.5 miles, both
old and attractive.
In 2005 Yarcombe entered the Calor
Village of the Year Competition and with
great pride and much hard work by our
organisers we won the Devon
Village of the Year. We then
automatically went through to the West
of England finals and finished top of
the Business of the Year category for
the region.
