Fencers stage spirited show Stratford Journal - 11 September 2003
A number of Stratford Fencing Club members attended the Hamlet Open Sabre competition last Saturday when 170 of the sports' top exponents were in action.
The Stratford contingent had a thoroughly enjoyable day, although some were out-classed they still competed and all achieved their own well fought positions.
Vicki Garrity was best of the bunch in 32nd position, while Lucy Harmer, in her first major open event, was unlucky to draw third-ranked Briton Chrystal Nichol who prevailed after a tough contest.
Sally Crane, one of the club's recent recruits, had surprised her opponents by taking points off them but it didn't prove enough to progress into the later rounds.
Father and son Paul and Chris Brenda put up a spirited show in the men's sabre competition.
