Help us help others - and the environment.
Donate your old mobile phone.
Mobile phone users are being asked to donate their old phones to the Rotary Club of Shetland in order to help raise money for charity. The club has teamed up with a leading recycling company in an innovative fundraising scheme.
Every time someone donates an old mobile phone, the club will receive a cash donation which will go to charity.
Developing countries with no landline infrastructure rely on mobile phones for vital communication and the recycled phones are sent to developing countries. This ties in with our support of Rotary Foundation which works for international peace and understanding through its various humanitarian, educational and cultural programmes worldwide.
Throwing away an old mobile phone is not very environmentally-friendly. Some mobile phone batteries contain cadmium, and other dangerous and toxic substances. Once dumped the phone casing can corrode and the cadmium could leak and cause pollution.
We are asking mobile phone users not to dump their old phones but instead donate them to the club and help our fundraising efforts. Our first mobile phone appeal day in January resulted in 166 phones being donated which raised over £350.
Collect
unwanted mobile phones, chargers and phone batteries from friends, relatives
and neighbours and from their workplace.
These can be handed over to any club member or leave
at the Shetland Scrap Store, Toll Clock Shopping Centre, Lerwick.
