Rotary Club of Shetland District 1010 - Scotland North - Club No. 1164
|
|
The Rotary Club of Shetland was chartered in 1972. During the first twenty-five years of its existence fund-raising for local and national charities was relentless and a conservative estimate is that the Club raised a sum in excess of £100,000 between 1972 and 1997. Donations included £3,200 to Polio Plus, Red Cross House in Aberdeen £10,000, Shetland MacMillan Nurse Appeal £10,000, the Lerwick Lifeboat Appeal £4,000, and Cancer Link Aberdeen and North (CLAN) £10,500. Club membership is 29 and members continue to maintain the Object of Rotary, "To encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise". As well as fund-raising members are committed to helping the less able in the community with weekly car runs, Christmas parcels and by providing daily newspapers for the pensioners rest room.
