Lithographed extract from the Parliamentary plan of the proposed railway covering a length in Melksham Parish, Wiltshire. 17 x 11 inches, printed on Whatman paper watermarked 1834, original hand colour. An unusually ephemeral survivor, this fragment of Brunel's survey having later been recycled as a folder.  £25.00

[R513] I. K. Brunel. [map plan] Great Western Railway. 1834. Lithographed extract from the Parliamentary plan of the proposed railway covering the length through Reading and eastwards. 17 x 11 inches, original hand colour. An unusually ephemeral survivor, this fragment of Brunel's survey having later been recycled as a folder.  £45.00

[R514] [I. K. Brunel]. [map plan] Oxford Worcester & Wolverhampton Railway - Droitwich. 1845. Lithographed extract from an unidentified Parliamentary plan of a proposed railway (believed to be the Oxford Worcester & Wolverhampton) covering a length through the parishes of Martin Hussingtree, Salwarp, and Westwood, near Droitwich worcestershire. 17 x 11 inchesr. An unusually ephemeral survivor, this fragment having later been recycled as a folder.  £18.00

[R516] [I. K. Brunel]. [map plan] Great Western Railway. 1833. Lithographed outline map showing the rather timid scheme prepared for the 1834 parliamentary session, for lines from Bristol to Bath and Reading to London, linked by the Kennet & Avon Canal. The project was defeated in the Lords, but a more robust proposal was authorised in 1835. An unusually ephemeral survivor, having later been recycled as a folder. Cropped at margins, worn centre fold, and some minor strengthening with archival tape. Possibly the earliest surviving map under the GWR title.  £75.00

[R521] Charles F. Cheffins. [Map of the Grand Junction Railway]. 1836. The southwest sheet of of this nicely engraved map published for the Directors. Covers the southern part of the line from Birmingham to Crewe, extending westwards to Shrewsbury, with a long section. The later Trent Valley and North Staffordshire Railways have been neatly added in ink. Dissected and linen mounted to fold in marbled endpapers with silk edging. Although lacking the neighbouring sheets, this one is virtually complete in itself for the southern part of this important railway - credited as being Britain's first trunk line.  £75.00

[R522] Thomas Bouch M.I.C.E, Engineer. [Map] North British Railway, Northern Section and Tay Bridge Railway. Large railway map dated 1869-70 showing Scotland between Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Arbroath, nominally to show the early proposals by Thomas Bouch for the ill-fated Tay Bridge. An additional proposal for a Forth Bridge with linking railways has been neatly added in ink. Printed by W & A K Johnston, old folds, some neat strengthening with archival tape. The genesis of the project which led to the catastrophe of 1879 and an indelible impression on civil engineering.  £120.00

[R523] Midland and North Western Railways. Map shewing the railway routes between England and Scotland. 1869. Large railway map of Britain coloured to show the three main routes from London to Scotland, with the Midland's authorised extension from Settle to Carlisle. After the struggle to obtain sanction for this line in 1866 the Midland came to a fresh understanding with the LNWR, and the two companies went to Parliament in 1869 for powers to abandon this costly scheme. A contemporary endorsement on the reverse indicates that this was the map used to support the Midland case. The bill was thrown out, and the MR had then to build this £3.5m railway, the famous Settle and Carlisle line. An unusual record of an interesting chapter in railway history. 29 x 42 inches, old folds, some minor strengthening with archival tape.  £70.00

[R524] North British railway. Map shewing the railway system between Scotland and London. 1869. Railway map of Britain coloured to show the main routes from London to Scotland, with the Midland's authorised extension from Settle to Carlisle. After the struggle to obtain sanction for this line in 1866 the Midland came to a fresh understanding with the LNWR, and the two companies went to Parliament in 1869 for powers to abandon this costly scheme. This map was produced by the North British Railway who vigorously opposed the bill, which was thrown out, leaving the MR to build this £3.5m railway, the famous Settle and Carlisle line. An unusual record of an interesting chapter in railway history. 23 x 32 inches, old folds.  £45.00

[R527] North Union Railway and John Hargreaves Junior. [Lease of goods traffic on the North Union Railway]. 1835. The original indenture dated 20 February 1835 under which John Hargreaves of Bolton took a lease for three years of the tolls on the goods traffic between Parkside and Chapel Lane, Wigan. Hargreaves, who had extensive interests in the Bolton area, borrowed locomotives from the Liverpool & Manchester Railway to power his trains. A lengthy document in a neat and legible hand on four large paper sheets stitched and folded, with the signature of Hargreaves and the wax seal impression of the Railway Company. Some neat archival strengthening of folds. The length of line referred to was the original Wigan Branch Railway, which had merged with the Preston & Wigan company the previous year under the first railway amalgamation authorised by Parliament. The route now forms part of the West Coast Main Line. This was the lessees part of the document, and if the Railway Company's copy has not survived it will now be a unique record of an arrangement reflecting the experimental nature of early railways, when taking an income and leaving traffic operation to others, following turnpike road practice, was still a valid option.  £145.00

[R528] Gray & Illidge, Solicitors. Manchester, Macclesfield & Tamworth Direct Railway with a branch to Crewe, and Macclesfield & Litchfield Railway Company. 1845. The original manuscipt bill to the promoters setting out the legal and other costs incurred by this firm on their behalf between June and August 1845, the frantic period of speculation that has come to be known as the 'Railway Mania'. Covers many journeys to and from London , meetings with landowners and others, printing, fees etc. with a total of over £500. Although registered, the Company's proposal for a line through Macclesfield, Leek, and Uttoxeter and Abbots Bromley to the Midland Counties at Tamworth would have created a shorter Manchester to London route than any subsequently built. Although not proceeded with, this was clearly one of the immediate antecedents to the North Staffordshire Railway, and is typical of the hundreds of unco-ordinated projects that were rushed out at great expense, to the ultimate benefit only of firms such as these who would undertake railway work. Folio, 6 pages in a clear hand, stitched, old folds. A unique record.  £110.00

[R531] Hendschel, U. Neueste Eisenbahn-Karte von Central-Europa mit genauer Angabe aller Stationen und der influirenden Post-Verbindungen. Frankfurt: Carl Jugel's Verlag, 1869. Thin paper, folding into card wallet. This edition corrected to December 1920. In good condition, although a previous owner has lightly highlighed some journeys in colour.  £28.00

[R541] Robert Stephenson and Frederick Swanwick. Plan and section of an intended Branch railway from the Midland Railway in the Parish of Wath-upon-Dearne in the West Riding of the County of York to the City of Lincoln. 1845. Detailed survey by James Alexander and Charles Cheffins of a proposed line over 44 miles long through Conisborough, Doncaster, Bawtry, and Gainsborough to Lincoln. 33 large lithographed sheets in the original printed paper covers, the latter with some repair and strengthening. Endorsed in Ink 'Imperfect copy' and may be an unrevised proof set. The railway was driven by George Hudson's machinations during the 'Railway Mania' to prevent the construction of a rival east coast route between London and York, but the later was authorised in 1846 and became the Great Northern Railway. Hudson's Midland scheme sank without trace, but the line was largely built by other companies during later Victorian years.  £225.00

[R542] Act of Parliament. Bolton and Preston Railway Act 1837. 1837. A contemporary printing of the main incorporating Act for this early main-line railway in Lancashire which ultimately became and important part of the LYR system. Variously dated 1913-14. Cloth backed, folded, some minor damage, but possibly a unique record in this form; only parts of this line appear to have been built.  £85.00
