[P129] [Hungarian Republic]. [Maps showing the defeat of the Hungarian
Republic]. 1849. A collection of contemporary maps illustrating the battles
in 1849 leading to the overthrow of the newly independent Hungary by the
combined forces of Austria and Russia. Comprises a general map of the country
together with six large scale and detailed topographic sheets showing the
positions of the forces in the various actions, leading to the decisive one at
Temesvar. Each sheet 30" x 21", and including detailed notes on the
progress of the battles. No indication of origin or cartographer; the quality
and detail suggests that this may have been an official item. The units of the
opposing forces are picked out in colour, and the sheets individually dissected
and cloth mounted folding to 8" x 10". Uibersichts Karte des

contrasting the Naval and Military forces of Japan and Russia' a contemporary
32 page pamphlet by Captain C. Abbott-Brown, with much factual detail on the

Times showing all the boroughs and constituencies for marking up as the results

[P179] [London Transport?]. Coronation Arrangements, Wednesday May 12th
1937. 1937. Folding coloured pocket map of the type issued by London
Transport showing central London, the procession rote, and the transport and
other arrangement in place for the coronation of King George VI. Detailed
instructions on front and reverse for accessing the area by road, bus,
underground, coach, tram etc. A little worn on folds, but an interesting
survivor. £14.00
[P180] John Bartholomew & Co.. Map of London District, NW section.. War
Office. A special four-sheet map of the London area was issued by Bartholomews
at the beginning of the 20th century using their half-inch scale layered map,
for use by the War Office for military training. The commissioning by the
Intelligence Division of civilian cartographic products was questioned in
Parliament and was directly responsible for the Ordnance Survey hurriedly
issuing a half-inch layed series of their own. This example is the North
Western sheet of the four, covering central London and the Chilterns out to
Oxford, Buckingham, and Epping. Good copy on cloth folding into distinctive red
cloth covers. £20.00

produced half-inch scale Bartholomew map centred on Birmingham, and showing
relief by bold layer colouring at hundred-feet intervals. This is possibly a
precursor of the standard series of Bartholomew sheets. Dissected and roughly

system]. Large undated 20th century plan showing the water supply system in
Denton, east of Manchester, from the Audenshaw Reservoirs through to the

1944.. HMSO, Large poster map of the Italian Battlefield, with an
enlargement of the Rome area on reverse and notes and photographs of the
progress of the War including the liberation of Rome and highlights from
Churchill's speech of 24th May. Propoganda item for the troops which 'is not
for the Orderly Room. It is to be displayed where the largest number of people
in the Unit can study it' - and the pinholes in the corners suggest tht this
was one. Part colour, 40" x 29", light wear. Interesting item of

1855. 1855. Lithographed map of the Crimea 'from the Admiralty Surveys'
showing the town and harbour at Sebastopol (with a vignette view) and at
Balaclava, with the military railway, Lord Raglan's headquarters, and the troop
positions of the various besieging forces picked out in colour. 26" x
20", folded on thin paper. An unusually detailed and comprehensive map for
what was clearly a hurriedly produced publication to meet public demand. Some
folds neatly strengthened with archival tissue, and some limited loss on one
fold, otherwise a good example of an ephemeral item. £48.00

boom of the 1880s spawned many publications including this touring map, which
re-uses the detail from John Cary's map of nearly a century earlier,
overprinted in red with main roads, and with tables of the routes and mileages
as inserts. 25 x 30 inches, lithographed, cloth mounted and folding in hard
covers. Numerous adverts pasted to rear of map panels. In nice condition - this
map usually found rain-soaked and oil-stained!
