proposed alteration of the Road between Craigour and the corner of Lord
Somerville's strip of planting....1777. 1777. A detailed manuscript
plan scale two chains to the inch showing the rerouting of the highway SE of
Edinburgh to a position further from Edmonstone House over a length of
threequarters of a mile. Typical of schemes by powerful local gentry to improve
their privacy, this appears to have been carried out and now forms part of the
A68 road. Size 26" x 17", including two longitudinal sections and
reference table. No indication of surveyor or engineer, but attractively and
proffessionally prepared. Ink and wash on cloth backed paper. An additional
note in another hand regarding gradients.

diversion at Spotland, Rochdale, 1800]. 1800. An original folded parchment
deed dated 1800 between the Trustees of the Bamford Road and Mrs Grace Lodge
late of Willow Hall, Halifax. Conveys the site of the old highway from Sandy
bank to Mitchelhey, Spotland, near Rochdale Lancashire. Signed by five of the
Road Trustees (James, Robert, and John Kay, James and Joseph Fenton, Kay
Allen). Endorsed on the skin is a neatly drawn ink and wash manuscript plan of
the old and new lengths of road, size 8" x 10" £65.00

Scotland drawn by Paton, engraved by Lizars and published by T. Brown in
Edinburgh. This is the earliest issue, distinguishing roads etc proposed,
undertaken to be made, under survey. With the division between Highlands and
Lowlands, the boundary of the Highland Distillery, and the proposed sailing
route for troops to Ireland between Stranraer and Larne. Attractively hand
coloured. Dissected and linen mounted folding into the original marble card
slipcase with printed label. Minor wear to map, case intact but rubbed and

[M191] [Thomas Telford]. Report from Select Committee on Carlisle and
Glasgow Road. 1815. Important report with evidence and appendices,
detailing the ruinous state of the existing road and the delays and
inconvenience to mail coaches, with a transcript of Thomas Telford's evidence
and his detailed report and estimate of the improvements needed over the 93
miles of highway, which he was to carry out over the next few years. 20 pages,
folio, accompanied by a folding engraved plan 87" x 12" in three
parts, and a sheet of long sections. The plan is an important topographic
record, with the title 'Map of the Mail Road between Glasgow and Carlisle with
the proposed improvements, surveyed and drawn under the direction of Thomas
Telford Civil Engineer by W. A. Provis. London, 10th June 1815, Thos. Telford'
Slight dampstaining to head and tail, maps cropped close to bottom of frame,
otherwise a good example of a typically thorough Telford item. Modern paper

[M201] Sir Douglas Fox & Partners. Transport Communication across the
Humber Estuary. report by Sir Douglas Fox & Partners, February 1930. 1930.
Detailed report by the well-known firm of consulting Egineers who had been
asked to investigate the type, location, and cost of a new crossing of the
Humber Estuary. They reported strongly in favour of a bridge, which could
include railway tracks, rather than a tunnel, the position similar to that
which was finally built some half a century later, although their recommended
girder design was very different to the eventual suspension structure. 14
pages, printed by Waterlow & Sons, with an appendix and fifteen drawings,
many large and multi-folding. These include maps, plans, elevations and
sections, two aerial photographs, and a large perspective view of what the
recommended bridge would look like. Folio, clipped in the original printed file
cover. The format suggests only a very few copies were issued. There are some
interesting pencil notes criticising several aspects of the scheme. £390.00

closing this road 572 yards in length must have succeded as it does not appear

interesting archive relating to the proposal by Stratford on Avon Corporation
in 1924 to widen the mediaeval bridge over the River Avon, and the furore which
this created. [1] Proposed Widening of Clopton Bridge. Report to the
Stratford-upon-Avon Preservation Committee by B. L. Hurst Esq, This report was
commissioned from a Civil Engineer, who came out strongly against the proposal
on aesthetic grounds and recommended a completely new bridge with a short

[M242] [Thomas Telford]. [Volume of reports etc on the Holyhead Road]. An
important collection of original Parliamentary Papers 1819-30 relating to the
reconstruction of the mail road from London to Holyhead, one of the principal
means of Anglo-Irish communication. The items are bound together in a folio
volume, cloth rather worn, formerly from the Harbour Engineer's Office at
Ramsgate, and latterly in the Library of Sir Alexander Gibb, Civil Engineer and
biographer of Telford. Comprising; Telford's Reports of June 1819 and June 1820
on the English Part of the Holyhead Road, 42 pages detailing all the existing
Trusts and the many defects of their roads, 'General Rules for Repairing Roads'
with an engraved plate of tools used, and proposals for improvements. Appended
are nine large folding sheets of plans and sections engraved by Arrowsmith and
hand coloured, covering many alterations between Chirk and Barnet; Reports [by
Telford] of the Progress and Present state of the Anglesea Road and Menai
Bridge, and on the Holyhead Road, May 1821, 23 pages; Holyhead Road (Shrewsbury
