ROAD WORKS

Traffic Congestion in and around Newport

Severe delays to bus services over the whole of Newport City due the road works on Kingsway and various other locations necessary for the redevelopment project of Newport City. Newport Bus apologises for any inconvenience caused to its customers through these delays which at times can be excessive and unpredicted. We are working with the Council to see if any alternative options will provide the bus network with less congested routes.

Once the Kingsway road works have been completed the continuing redevelopment project in Newport particularly in and around the Bus Station will continue to cause problems during the duration of the works. These matters are outside of our control but we will endeavour to minimise disruption wherever possible. The difficulty for staff is the unpredictability of traffic problems which can be seriously enhanced when there are problems on the motorway network. The knock on  effects of these traffic problems can affect every route at varying times and days. Again we apologise for any inconvenience caused which is entirely out with our control. However we can all look forward to the positive results the redevelopment will have on Newport and we will have to work round the problems as best we can during reconstruction.

6th January 2008 Fares Increase

Due to the significant rise recently in fuel costs certain fares are to be increased from Sunday 6th January 2008. These are mainly the single and return fares. Our Day Ticket of £2.50 and other range of season tickets for regular travellers remain unchanged.

We are also introducing a Child Day Ticket priced at £2 but from 6th January 2008 child fares will only be available for issue and use up until 9pm (2100 hours).

19th November 2007 New Service X30

Launch of New Express Bus Service Newport to Cardiff X30

Newport Bus is introducing a brand new half hourly express bus service between Newport and Cardiff city centres via the motorway network on Monday 19th November 2007. The service will operate every half hour each way during the day Monday to Saturday with a journey time of just 35 minutes via the M4 Motorway. The day ticket (and day return fare) is priced at just £2.50.  The service will be operated by brand new dedicated air conditioned Scania OmniCity vehicles costing nearly half a million pounds with CCTV cameras and screen, and will provide a real alternative to the private car which in turn will help combat both cities’ growing traffic congestion issues.

The current Service 30 (run jointly with Cardiff Bus) will continue to operate every twenty minutes via Cardiff Road and St Mellons and take about fifty minutes. Whilst it serves the local communities along the line of route there is significant end to end traffic which we believe will benefit from a more direct service. We also believe that there is potential for student (university) travel in both directions (Cardiff and Newport Universities), commuter travel in both directions, shopping in both directions and for leisure and pleasure in both directions. We believe a speedier service priced competitively will attract car users reducing traffic congestion in both cities.

The Company has invested over seven million pounds (£7m) in new vehicles in the last five years (with ever improving exhaust and emission controls – our latest vehicles are to Euro Four standard) and is committed to providing modern public transport opportunities. The introduction of the three dedicated vehicles on the new express service is a further investment of half a million pounds. The service will be driven by dedicated drivers specifically hand picked for the route.

19th November 2007 New Uniforms

The Company continues to invest in a professional approach and is introducing new uniforms for all drivers over the course of the next few months.

19th November 2007 Service 8A/C

Due to unreliability caused through the traffic congestion and road works we have retimed intermediate timing points in an endeavour to provide customers with a more realistic timetable.

7th September 2007

Service 30/30D Cardiff City Centre

After 2000hours (8pm) on Friday and Saturday evenings due to health and safety reasons Service 30/30D will only serve Greyfriars Road in the outward direction (Cardiff to Newport) until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience.

25th June 2007

Minor timetable changes to Services 8A/C and 30/30D - a new timetable booklet is available from the Bus Station Enquiry Office.

8th June 2007

Newport Transport's Commercial Driving Training Centre has been given approval by the Sector Skill Council to open an approved Driver CPC Centre with both Driver CPC PCV and LGV courses being approved. Further information and developments will be announced shortly. http://www.dsa.gov.uk/Category.asp?cat=470

1st April 2007 - Service 30/30D

From Sunday 1st April 2007 following customer requests Newport Bus are extending the £2.50 Day Rover Ticket to include Service 30/30D to Cardiff. This means that the £2.50 day Rover ticket is available for purchase and use on ANY Newport Bus bus journey and allows all day travel on the entire Newport Bus service network.

Unfortunately Cardiff Bus are only willing to accept our ticket for travel within the Newport City boundary on their Service 30 journeys. We apologise if this is causes customers any difficulties but is beyond our control. (For example a customer buying a Day Rover on a Newport Bus Service 30/30D to Cardiff must return on a Newport Bus Service 30/30D).

Also from 1st April Cardiff Bus are making changes to their ticket and fares ranges;

CardiffBus Day To Go/Weekly To Go tickets WILL only be valid for sale and use on Service 30/30D within Cardiff County area (no longer includes Newport).

CardiffBus Day To Go Plus/Weekly To Go Plus tickets are available for sale and use on Service 30/30D between Newport and Cardiff.

Cardiff Bus have increased single and return fares outside of the Newport area.

To avoid confusion and to offer our customers full flexibility and choice Newport Bus have agreed to issue and accept the following tickets on any Service 30/30d journey:

Adult           Child        Family (max 5 persons at least 1 but not more than 2 adults)

Day To Go             £3.00         £2.00        £7.00    Only within Cardiff County area

Day To Go Plus      £3.50         £2.30        £8.00

Weekly To Go       £13.00        £8.00           n/a      Only within Cardiff County area

Weekly To Go Plus £16.00        £10.00         n/a

Cardiff Bus Monthly To Go/Monthly To Go Plus tickets are accepted for travel on Service 30/30D.

These tickets allow return travel on Service 30/30D and all day travel on Cardiff Bus services within Cardiff (check with Cardiff Bus for full details www.cardiffbus.com ). (They are not available for use on any other Newport Bus service).

We apologise for the short notice but we think these changes will minimise the confusion for staff and customers. Whilst we have endeavoured to be flexible in accepting and issuing Cardiff Bus products we apologise that the interavailability of our Day Rover ticket on Cardiff Bus is restricted. However Cardiff Bus will still accept Newport Bus Faresfair within Newport (giving unlimited travel on Newport Bus bus services (excluding Service 30 beyond Castleton) and our FaresfairPlus between Newport and Cardiff priced at £15 weekly and £49 four weekly (giving unlimited travel on Newport Bus bus services (including Service 30).

Newport Velo Youth Cycle Club

Newport Bus have sponsored the Youth Track League at the Newport City's National Velodrome. The Tuesday evening youth event will now be known as The Newport Bus Youth Track League.

The youth league provides local children with an excellent opportunity to develop and demostrate their racing skills. It already provides an excellent training ground for Welsh youth talent in this exciting sport.

Newport Bus are proud to be main sponsors and will provide perpetual trophies for the annual Champion in all four youth rider categories of Under 14 and Under 16 girl and boy.

This extends the involvement of Newport Bus with youth cycling in the city, where we are the main sponsor of the Newport Velo Youth Cycling Club.

New initiative in partnership with PayPoint

Currently Newport Bus customers can only purchase advance tickets from Newport Bus Station Enquiry Office. A new initiative to be introduced during January 2007 will allow customers to buy weekly, monthly and quarterly bus travel from thirty (30) local shop outlets across Newport (once they have obtained a photocard from Newport Bus Station).

Where you see the PayPoint sign your local retailer will be able to offer you a whole range of tickets to travel on Newport Bus services. All customers will need will be a travel card (available from the Bus Station).

This will allow a convenient way for customers to buy tickets in their home or work locality without having to go to the bus station or during bus station opening hours.

Look out for further details

9th April 2007 OLD GREEN ROUNDABOUT - Road works

From 9th April 2007 the roads leading up to the Old Green Roundabout are to be reduced to single lane - probably for about twelve weeks. As we believe this will have a further detrimental effect on the reliability of the bus services we have reluctantly taken the decision to miss out Queensway on all services in ward to Newport Bus Station (either services will use Stow Hill or go straight down Kingsway to the Bus Station) and the Malpas Road Sainsbury's stop (with all services operating straight from Harlequin roundabout to Kingsway to the Bus Station). We apologise for any inconvenience during these essential road works and will review the position as soon as we are able.

Congestion Buster

Following requests to Newport City Council some months ago that our services be given the option to use Stow Hill and Skinner Street as an alternative route when Old Green Roundabout and Kingsway are heavily congested with traffic we are pleased that from Monday 20th November 2006 that this will be possible. We are grateful to the City Council for agreeing to this alternative which should help the reliability of the daytime bus services. We are having to train all drivers in the procedures to use this access route and therefore there maybe some little delay before full introduction. For further details please click on Congestion Buster

Commencing 30th October 2006 (Awaiting revised implementation date)

Ringwood Avenue and Ringland Circle, Ringland, Newport

Newport City Council Temporary Traffic Order

Approximately three days for each of the three locations indicated below. None of the indicated roads will be shut concurrently.

Ringland Circle    - from its junction with Ringwood Avenue to its junction with Dunstable Road

Ringland Circle     - from its junction with Dunstable Road in a north easterly direction for approximately 150 metres

Ringwood Avenue    - from its junction with Ringland Circle to its junction with Abbey Road

Apparently the reason is to enable the partial reconstruction of the carriageway and replacement of speed cushions along a road too narrow to maintain vehicle access.

The roads will be closed during the day time and will obviously affect the various Ringland services and school runs. Please contact the Council's Contact Centre 01633 656656 for more details.
