Nina - looking beautiful as ever

Shazeldon Love in the Soul JW ex Stanroph Sailors Fantasy
DOB 11 December 2000

2007 was a quiet year for Nina. Although she attended Crufts she was not lucky enough to be in the cards. Bored with showing she much preferred to stay at home and so we decided to give her one more litter. We mated her to Sh Ch Ritzilyn Brandon JW and at the end of September she produced 10 live, healthy puppies, 7 bitches and 3 dogs. All were quickly spoken for - the only thing was to decide who went where! Carolake In Demand (Demi) stayed here with her mum, Carolake I Touched The Moon (Phoebe) went to Penny King and Carolake Imperial Island (Alfie), went overseas to the Isle of Wight to Liz and Alan Wainwright. All three make their debut in the show ring at the end of March. Nina meanwhile, bereft of coat but raring to go, was delighted to get back out on shooting days at Gurston Down. I've not told her yet, but now she is a Veteran I am planning a few select shows for her to attend in 2008 ..... she will be pleased!

My beautiful girl has had two full seasons picking up pheasant and partridge at Gurston Down in Wiltshire and has more than proved her worth as a working gundog. Extremely soft-mouthed she excels on "runners", covering the ground with ease and she loves hunting for lost birds in the woods, rarely coming back empty handed.

2006 - Nina had the year off to have a family. However, things did not go quite according to plan and her singleton daughter was delivered by caesarean. Initially Nina rejected the puppy but was persuaded to nurse it and finally it dawned on her that this babe was actually hers! Maternal instincts went into overdrive and all was well. With no coat to speak of Nina had the rest of the year off only coming back into the show ring in December at Weston-super-Mare Open Show where she won BOB and Gundog Group 1 under John Thirwell.

2005 - Once again Nina has more than held her own in the show ring. She won her way out of Post Grad with wins at GRC of Wales and Southern GRS, won her Mid Limit classes at East of England and Leeds, won Limit and took the RCC at Welsh Kennel Club and won Mid Limit and took her third RCC at Scottish Kennel Club. In her final appearance of the year she won her Limit class at Driffield, winning her way out of Mid Limit. Her good year included 2nds at Border Union, GRC, URC, Richmond and Belfast. She also had three BOB’s and a RBIS at open shows.

Nina had a very successful 2004, winning sixteen BOB's plus many Group placings, four Post Graduate classes at Championship shows, was awarded the Reserve Challenge Certificate by Mr Terry Thorn at Belfast in September and won Best In Show at the Southern Golden Retriever Society Open Show under Mrs Sue Towers (Alibren).

In January 2003 Nina gained her Show Gundog Working Certificate proving she has brains as well as beauty!

At Gundog Society of Wales 2002 Nina won the Young Kennel Club Members Stakes with my daughter Kristy handling, the finals of which were held at Crufts 2003 where she gained a 4th. She also qualified for the Pro Dog Breed Stakes Final held in December where she was short-listed to the last four - judge Jane Lilley said of her "This 2 year old simply stole my heart! Not only is she beautifully made but is a joy to watch on the move both up, down and in profile".

In June 2003 she produced her first litter to Ch Xanthos Black Thorn JW. After nine months out of the show ring she made a spectacular return and quickly gained the final points to complete her Show Certificate of Merit.

Baby Nina

2001-2002 - Nina came to me in February 2001 just before the countryside closed down with Foot and Mouth Disease. Her first few months were spent walking out on a lead and she could hardly believe it the first time we went onto the Forest once restrictions were lifted and she could really free run. We were very fortunate that her puppy career started the week after the end of F&M and she never missed a show.

In her first six months in the ring she won BPIS at Berkshire Downs & Chilterns GRC Ch Show, 1st Puppy Bitch and Deb Bitch at South Western GRC Ch Show and a further 14 championship show placings. At Open shows she was RBPIS at Isle of Wight Gundog Club and also Newton Abbot & South Devon CS, she had 2 BPIG, 7 BPIB and 14 Open show 1sts.

At Midland GRC Pup of the Year she went through to the quarter finals. She won her classes at GRC of Wales, Southern GRC, Southern Counties, Three Counties, South Wales, Leeds and URC gaining 10 firsts in all plus a further 18 placings at Championship shows including 7 seconds. At Open Shows she was BIS at Romsey & District CA and during the year won 8 BOB, 3 RBOB, 2 Gundog Groups and 25 1sts.

At Bath she qualified for the Pet Plan Junior Stakes. The first Golden Retriever ever to win through to the finals.

She passed her Kennel Club Good Citizens Bronze Test and she is a registered PAT Dog and visits a local hospice each week.
