Transvaal stamps used in Swaziland


The South African Republic (ZAR), Vurtheim stamps overprinted 'Swazieland' by the Government Printer in Pretoria were probably available in Swaziland by November, 1889.

ZAR one penny overprinted 'Swazieland

One penny ZAR postage stamp overprinted 'Swazieland' in black.

ZAR half penny overprinted 'Swazieland

Half penny ZAR postage stamp overprinted 'Swazieland' in red.


It is not clear when the overprinted stamps were withdrawn, they were invalidated from 7th November
1894 which, would imply they were taken out of regular use a good time before this. ZAR stamps,
without overprint, cancelled in Swaziland are to be found dated from late December 1892.

Agreement between the South African Republic (ZAR) and Britan that Swaziland would become a Protectorate of the ZAR

from February 1895 meant that ZAR postage stamps, without overprints, continued to be used until the outbreak
of the Second Boer War in October 1899; the postal service ceased soon after this.


Following the Second Boer War, Transvaal stamps were uesd in Swaziland from 1902.

Interprovincial Period. The stamps of the Transvaal continued to be used and the stamps of the other provinces could also be used in Swaziland.
