A window into Susie’s life story Born and raised in North-east Scotland, Susie spent 17 years in journalism, firstly on a provincial daily newspaper for 10 years then in a local government press office. She moved to England in 1992 to do full time degree studies and this was followed by work as a co-ordinator of a university course and then administrator of a national storytelling initiative. She returned to the town of her roots in 2002 to explore the Scottish heritage of storytelling. Since then she has been working as a freelance storyteller, gathering a wide-ranging repertoire and being open to a variety of opportunities to develop her gifts and skills. Looking back to her childhood appetite for conversation, relationship and people in general, Susie realises that she has been telling stories all her life. Someone once remarked: "You must have been inoculated with a gramophone needle at birth!" Whilst said in jest, it is a truism all the same. The Scots call it having the ‘gift of the gab’. However, it was only after encountering storytellers at a summer festival in 1998 that Susie realised she wanted to learn about the ancient art of the oral tradition. Deep in her soul something had moved and she knew that storytelling would be a major part of her life from that moment. On the journey, she discovered that the tools of the trade are learned best by sitting at the feet of the great tellers - at national and international festivals, in workshops, at training schools, or simply just sitting around the fire. Having invested many, many hours of doing this, she now shares the fruits of her research, training and experience in performances and workshops in a wide range of settings. | ||
