Trying to capture a piece of the world
around me in pencil or in paint is something that has consumed my life
since the age of eleven when I was awarded my first ‘highly commended’
certificate by the Royal Drawing Society.
Whilst I still draw, soft pastel is the painting medium through
which I now try to convey this personal vision. Working very closely
with nature on location has led to a much greater appreciation of the
natural world around me. My digital camera, whilst a useful tool with
which to record a fleeting cloud or lighting effect, is no substitute
for being there and becoming part of the exchange of nature, eye and mind.
Light is the motivating factor for me; without it there would
be nothing. My paintings take nature as a start point, the inspiration
for an excursion into design, form and colour that attempts to distil
the essence of the scene before me whilst trying to avoid nature’s mistakes.
I live in the rural county of Norfolk and have spent the last
30 odd years of my life with the vast skies, the gently undulating land,
the miles of rivers and broads and the windswept coast that form this special
place. It is from these subjects that I receive my inspiration.
My goal is to capture a piece of the spontaneous dance of light
across the palette of nature. Working on location forces me to get in
touch with the moment, allowing little time for the detailed study of
things. I hope my pieces are like a glance when we see something that
makes us linger for a moment.
