Welcome to equalpartnership.org.uk. This website is part of a campaign to make civil partnerships available to every committed couple, regardless of sexual orientation.

But why are we kicking up a fuss about that? Gay couples have civil partnership, straight couples have civil marriage, the legal rights are the same, so where's the problem?

The problem is that, though the legal rights and responsibilities are essentially the same, civil marriage is a peculiar legal set-up with a direct line back to the middle ages and some odd sexual assumptions - it has a lot of baggage, in other words, that civil partnership doesn't carry.

If someone objects to getting married, it doesn't mean they object to commitment. They might just want to contract a legal partnership with a fellow citizen, rather than entering an institution that makes anachronistic assumptions about the roles of men and women in society (read more...).

Worst of all, having one system for homosexual citizens and another system for heterosexual citizens means that we are a society formally segregated on the grounds of sex and sexuality. This is no more defensible - logically or morally - than segregation by race or by religion.

Still not sure what the fuss is about? Have a look at the frequently asked questions, or follow the links to the left for even more information on the campaign and on the background to the issues.

Most importantly, to help us change the law please sign our petition.
